Electives and Speakers: neoLeader conference 2018

Charles de Jongh – Anchored in Scripture
Charles is a lecturer at Malyon College in Brisbane, commencing in 2007, and is the current Academic Dean. Charles was raised in South Africa and initially worked as an air traffic controller in the South African Air Force. Charles pastored a church in South Africa before becoming a lecturer. Charles’ expertise is in biblical and youth studies and will be running an elective on the importance of Scripture in deepening our Christian character for lasting leadership.

Today, more than ever, Christian leaders will need to ensure that they are soundly anchored to ensure that they honour God and impact the world. While much attention is being given to various dimensions of Christian leadership, one that needs to be emphasized is the challenge to be anchored in the Scriptures as the primary source of Christian living and understanding. This elective will consider why the Scriptures are critical to Christian leadership and ministry, and how such anchoring is vital to the future of Christianity and Christian ministry.

Dan Sweetman – Taking Control of Your Time and Habits

Dan is the current senior pastor of Lifepoint Church Brisbane. Dan has had various experience and leadership roles in television, marketing and fundraising prior to becoming a pastor. Dan is also on the neoLeader board. We’re excited to have Dan share with us how to take control of our time and habits to become deep charactered leaders anchored in Jesus.

A challenging fact of life is that we are defined by what we actually do, not what we want to do! (see Matthew 21:28) Most of what we do every day is actually automatic, it just ‘happens’, because habits power our lives more than intentions do. A life of deep character ANCHORED in Jesus must then be a life anchored in the habits and way of life of Jesus. For many of us, all the best commitments, sermons and small groups in the world have little impact on our regular day because we struggle to change the imbedded habits of our life. This elective will start with a personal survey on your day, and will then provide 4 practical strategies to taking control of your life and becoming the ruler of your time and habits instead of letting them run your life for you.

In 1984 Richard Blackmon’s research of a 1000 Ministers in California across four denominations (Presbyterian, Methodist, AOG & Episcopalian) was received with shock by the Christian community when it revealed that there are significant challenges to those serving in ministry. The Francis A. Schaeffer Institute of Church Leadership Development revealed that from 1989 to 2006 revealed that…over 70% of pastors are so stressed out and burned out that they regularly consider leaving the … 35% to 40% of pastors actually do leave the ministry, most after only five years.  This presentation will cover what the research says about ministry being hazardous, as well as what we can do to survive these challenges but go on and thrive.
